Penny’s Hospital comprises of 11 homes plus Warden’s accommodation situated in King Street in the heart of the city of Lancaster. Ten dwellings are suitable for single people, and one for a couple. The larger one has a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom and kitchen, whilst the singles are ‘bedsit’ style, with separate kitchen and bathroom.
The central courtyard provides a pleasant garden which gives Penny’s Hospital a distinct community atmosphere. A small chapel at the head of the courtyard completes the scene, and services are held regular intervals throughout the year for residents, family and friends and Trustees.
‘I have lived at Penny’s Hospital for twenty five years. I worked here as warden for 19 years and then when I retired I moved in as a resident. There are twelve cottages on the complex and two lovely flower beds. We pay a nominal sum for maintenance and the cottages are well looked after, as are the residents. We have laughed together and cried together, it’s a lovely place to live.’
